The Challenge: No Room for Guests in Their “Dream Home”
This family had just bought their dream home in Northridge—but quickly realized it wasn’t big enough for their lifestyle. With two teenagers at home and frequent out-of-town guests, they were constantly juggling space. Visitors ended up on the living room pull-out couch or booking a nearby hotel. Either way, it was stressful and uncomfortable.
They needed one more bedroom—a flexible, private space that could serve as a guest suite, but not take anything away from how the family lived day-to-day.
The Design: A Petite, Vaulted Ceiling Guest House Using Our Pre-Designed Plan
When they found us online, they immediately connected with our Modern Guest House plan—a 400 sq ft pre-designed ADU that checked all the boxes. We made a few minor modifications and got to work.
- Vaulted ceilings make the modest footprint feel big and bright
- A full-size kitchen makes it perfect for extended stays or entertaining
- The open layout gives it dual functionality: guest suite + pool house/rec room
- It’s detached from the main house, giving everyone privacy when guests are in town
By keeping the size efficient and the design streamlined, we were able to build quickly and keep costs down, while delivering a space that feels elevated and welcoming.
The Result: A Private Retreat That Works Hard All Year
Now, when guests visit, they have their own space to unwind—no more crowding the house or sleeping on the sofa. And when it’s not in use, the ADU serves as a pool house, game room, or quiet escape from the main house.
This project is a great reminder that you don’t always need a huge structure to make a huge impact. A well-designed 400 sq ft ADU can dramatically improve how a home functions for a growing family.
We’ve already got several more versions of this same plan in the works—and for good reason. It’s a gem.
