Transforming this underused 2-car garage into a fully functional accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was more than a home improvement project for our client in Manhattan Beach; it was an investment in their family.
This newly constructed studio apartment offers a comfortable home-away-from-home for our clients' aging parents. A private and comfortable place within steps of the main house.
When our clients approached us about designing this ADU, they wanted an ADU that blended seamlessly with the existing home. They wanted to retain the look of their single family home, and they wanted the ADU to be almost undetectable by people passing by.
We took those desires and designed an ADU that converted their existing attached garage into a ADU that made no changes to the exterior of the home. The entrance to the ADU was tucked into the side yard, the the existing garage door was replaced with a modern insulated exterior wall that was designed to look exactly like the garage door it replaced.
The result is a comfortable ADU AND a home that retains it's original charm.
